Managing risk in Vessel Design

In this project, one area of risk was the filling and emptying of a vessel containing hazardous materials, including various upset conditions, using gas as the motive force.

Key considerations included:

• Flow and pressure conditions as a function of temperature, reaction kinetics, and friction.
• The impact on tank design – diameter, wall thickness, and materials.

In addition to the chemical engineering aspects, we also conducted a 3D transient fluid dynamics assessment of the vessel and process. This helped verify the design and confirm performance under both normal and upset conditions.
