Tackling Complex Flow Challenges in Oil and Gas Systems

In one recent project for a major oil company, our engineers were tasked with addressing concerns around slugging and potential blowouts in bends, and key expansion loops. These issues could arise during emergency scenarios if the line became flooded, posing significant safety and performance risks.

 

Using Advanced CFD to Model Transient Flow Conditions

To assess the system’s behaviour, we applied a 3D Volume of Fluid (VOF) Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach. This allowed us to simulate the system as it transitioned from empty (vapour-filled) to full of liquid hydrocarbons under transient conditions.

A key objective was to determine whether slug loads could cause overload or fatigue loading within the system. By accurately modelling these dynamic conditions, we provided our client with the insight needed to make informed design and safety decisions.
