What we learned at Data Centre World
Earlier in March, Docan’s MD and Technical Director, Rick Carroll, attended the Data Centre World event at Excel London and was treated to some incredible speakers! From Louis Theroux and Professor Hannah Fry, to Sarah Armstrong-Smith, Former Chief Security Advisor at Microsoft, global experts on data centres, AI and security gathered to discuss the ins and outs of the changing world.
We learned just how transferable so many of the skills and methodologies used in high-tech and high-integrity industries are. Whether it’s oil and gas, drilling, renewable energy, or nuclear, those skills from the last several decades are being implemented more and more in the context of data centres.
The reasons why break down to some core basic principles we can see across all of these industries:
- The key technology and information being stored is extremely valuable.
- A high degree of reliability is necessary.
Here’s what else we learned at Data Centre World:
- Energy efficiency is key,
- The strength of independent power sources,
- It can take 6+ years to get onto the UK grid, whereas it can take a year or less for an independent source.
- Plastic piping is becoming the preference over metallics due to water quality,
- Direct fluid cooling is being used more and more with dielectric fluids,
- Some are hydrocarbons!
Here at Docan, we have been excited to work on data centres with our specialist engineering teams in:
- Mechanical,
- Structural,
- Processing,
- And Chemical.
Together, they have delivered projects including cooling analyses and system designs, as well as piping engineering, structural design, and verification.
Being independent Engineering Consultants means we can offer valuable skills, experience, advice, and assistance to owners, operators, constructors, and OEMs. This industry is growing, and we can help you grow with it!
