Nuclear Engineering Consultants
We are a team of professional engineers and associates with a deep level of understanding and expertise in the nuclear industry, offering unique and innovative consultancy services across the sector.
Experienced nuclear energy engineers
Alongside our core team of experienced engineers, we have an extended network of some of the most talented engineers across the globe.
Through many years of experience, our solutions have been fine-tuned and tailored towards working on high integrity designs within highly regulated industries. We have an extensive understanding of the nuclear sector’s regulatory framework, and our verification processes are compatible with those of leading nuclear companies.
We are familiar with common codes of practice across the nuclear sector, including ASME III (Class 1,2,3) and RCC-M, as well as the codes used in non-nuclear applications, such as ASME VIII Div. 1 and 2, B31.1. and B31.3, PD 5500, BS EN 13445, and others.
Our engineering team and associates have vast nuclear experience, working with contractors such as Jacobs, WOOD, Frazer Nash, Cavendish, Mott McDonald and others, and some of the major operators include Sellafield Sites and EDF.
Our expert engineering experience includes:
-
Design and assessment of mechanical systems
- Covering mechanical handling and lifting calculations and analysis, design and assessment of pressure systems using Design By Rule (DBR) and Design By Analysis (DBA), transient dynamics and impact analysis assessment using explicit FEA (ABAQUS and LS-DYNA) and to the R3 impact assessment procedure, and more.
- Design of high-temperature (+700C) pressure systems including pressure vessels and piping systems, including extended service beyond the typical 100,000 hours design life.
- Decommissioning studies combining Fitness For Service of damaged equipment to end of life and structural integrity assessment for lifting out of large structures/pressure vessels.
- Our main FEA tools include ABAQUS, ANSYS, and ADINA. As an independent company we are not tied to using any FEA code – we use the right tool for the job and can meet our clients’ requests for particular software to be used. -
Piping Design, Analysis, and Assessment
Piping Design, Analysis, and Assessment
- Pipe Stress Analysis (PSA) tools include PSA5, CAESAR II, AutoPipe, and ROHR2. Again, we use the right tool for the job and are not commercially obliged to prefer one software over another.
- Development of special SIFs for non-standard equipment. -
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
- We use ANSYS CFX/Fluent but can use other codes such as Siemens FloEFD and others, depending on requirements.
- CFD services cover steady-state and transient analysis, fully coupled Fluid Structural Interaction (FSI) problems, dispersion analysis, wind loading calculations, HVAC studies, fire and smoke modelling for ventillation, and more.
- Reactor Excursion and Leak Analysis Program (RELAP) analysis. -
Fitness For Service Assessments
Fitness For Service Assessments
- We can perform FFS assessments to a variety of codes including API 579, BS 7910 and R6.
- FFSA to all parts of API 579 including assessment of metal loss, crack like defects, fire damage, creep, and fatigue. -
Nonlinear seismic assessments of buildings and equipment
- All stages of analysis considered from static approximation, through to the Response Spectra method and full transient dynamics analysis for complex non-linear systems.
- All stages of analysis considered from static approximation, through to the Response Spectra method and full transient dynamics analysis for complex non-linear systems.
- Also completing structural design and assessment using AutoCAD/BricsCAD, CADWorx, and the STAAD analysis software, complimented by the ADINA-STAAD modelling interface to consider detailed structural modelling and assessment in FEA. -
Thermal stress analysis
- Thermal-Mechanical-Coupled analysis to determine accurate through wall stresses in thick pressure vessels under transient thermal load cases.
- Assessment of creep to ASME and R5 methods. -
Fatigue and fracture assessments
- Analysis and assessment using fracture mechanics of crack like defects using the FAD approach and per the methods of R5/R6, and BS 7910 and using the CrackWise assessment tool.
- Also using FEA methods for crack propagation including the use of Zencrack software. -
Design of major nuclear piping systems
- Pipe Stress Analysis and piping design including vibration, spectrum response, soil interaction/buried piping, and others.
- Multi-discipline system design including Civils, Structural, Mechanical, and Process areas. -
Field Services
Field Services
- Digital twinning, Surveying & Laser Scanning, and Reverse Engineering.
